Eagles' Brown wins AFL rising star award
West Coast defender Mitch Brown has won the NAB AFL Rising Star nomination for round 19.
Brown, whose twin brother Nathan plays for Collingwood, was rewarded for his tremendous effort in defence during the Eagles' upset five-point victory over Western Bulldogs on Saturday.
The 20-year-old, taken with pick No.16 in the 2006 national draft, gathered 22 possessions and took seven marks.
Brown played five games in his debut season of 2007 but missed the entire '08 campaign after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament during a pre-season fixture.
But the 92kg key position player has bounced back well this season, missing just one game and showing his versatility with roles in defence and up forward.
"We are rapt for Mitch, who has worked extremely hard and deserves the recognition," West Coast Eagles coach John Worsfold said.
"After missing all of last year with a serious knee injury, he has missed just one game this season and has been extremely consistent in a variety of roles.
"Historically the year after a knee reconstruction is very tough and Mitch's ability to overcome those hurdles highlights just how meticulous he has been in his preparation.
"He has done a terrific job for us playing forward and back as part of his development has been extremely consistent at both ends of the ground."
