Aussie trio bomb out of US Open
Australians have endured a miserable opening day at the US Open in New York, with Samantha Stosur, Jessica Moore and Chris Guccione all suffering first-round defeats.
Stosur was seeded 29th in the women's event but her grand slam blues continued with a demoralising 6-3 6-2 loss to French teenager Alize Cornet, a qualifier ranked 96th in the world.
Stosur made a decent enough start, establishing a 3-1 lead in the first set before completely falling apart.
The 23-year-old Queensland lost 11 of the next 13 games and was looking for the exit gates after committing her 31st unforced error on match point.
It was Stosur's third successive first-round defeat in New York and Australia's top-ranked women's player has now failed to progress beyond the second round in 16 of her 19 career majors.
Seventeen-year-old Moore, a wildcard making her main-draw debut but at Flushing Meadows, was respectable - and even showed signs of promise - in going down 6-3 6-2 to 20th-seeded Czech Lucie Safarova.
Moore, ranked 610 places below Safarova at No.633 in the world, won the opening two games of the match before succumbing to the superior baseline power of the 2007 Australian Open quarter-finalist.
Guccione endured a disappointing 6-7 (2-7) 6-3 6-2 6-3 defeat at the hands of American prodigy Donald Young, a wildcard ranked No.223 in the world.
Young, 18, is the reigning Wimbledon junior champion and in 2005 became the youngest ever winner of a junior grand slam when he hoisted the Australian Open trophy at just 15 years and six months old.
But his victory over the 91st-ranked Guccione was only his second success in 14 matches on the ATP Tour - and first in three US Open starts.
Australia's only other player in action on day one of the championships - Peter Luczak - was due to face Peruvian Luis Horna later.
