Stosur storms into semis
Local hero Samantha Stosur has stormed into the quarter-finals of the Uncle Tobys Hardcourt Championships on the Gold Coast with an emphatic win over rising Czech star Iveta Benesova.
Stosur dominated the match from the outset and, despite being forced into a second-set tiebreaker, was never really headed by her higher-ranked opponent during the 6-2 7-6 (7-3) second-round triumph.
A relieved Stosur said she was disappointed not to be able to finish the match off earlier in the second set.
"I was a bit disappointed I couldn't get it at 5-2 or 5-3 but she picked it up a little bit and when she did that some of my balls started to drop a bit short and didn't have as much on it," she said.
The 20-year-old got off to a perfect start to the match, breaking Benesova in her first service game and again to seal the opening set.
Stosur, currently ranked 65 in the world, looked likely to cruise to an easy win when she claimed the opening two games of the second set but was brought to a sudden halt when Benesova finally found her groove.
Benesova broke back immediately and quickly levelled the set to leave the noisy home crowd suddenly silent.
But on the back of huge support from the parochial crowd and a series of Lleyton Hewitt-like fist pumps and "come ons", Stosur regained control.
She forced Benesova to save a match point on serve in the 12th game of the set before dominating the tiebreaker to claim yet another impressive win.
"I had to try and get myself back up towards the end of the second set," Stosur said about adopting Hewitt-style pump-up tactics.
