Aussie Sam Stosur out of French Open
Australian No.27 seed Samantha Stosur is out of the French Open after losing to Nicole Vaidisova in the third round.
The Czech sixth seed cruised to a 6-4 6-4 victory, setting up a fourth-round meeting with 19th seed Tathiana Garbin of Italy.
The victory gave Vaidisova a 4-0 head-to-head record against Stosur and was her third straight-sets win over the Australian, who was playing in the third round for the first time at Roland Garros.
The 18-year-old Czech broke Stosur in the opening game of the match and kept her cool to save break points in the second and fourth games.
Stosur saved three break points in the seventh, but was ultimately broken in that game when she hit a forehand into the net.
The Australian broke back immediately and then held serve to move back to 4-5 but Vaidisova converted her second set point with a backhanded drop shot.
Vaidisova took two break points in the seventh game of the second set when Stosur hit a backhand which the chair umpire ruled wide.
She converted the first when the Australian hit the ball out to take a 4-3 lead.
Serving for a place in the fourth round, Vaidisova sent down her ninth and tenth aces of the match before clinching victory with a forehand winner.
Vaidisova has a total of 18 aces for the tournament so far, six more than anyone else in the women's singles draw.
Stosur will now turn her full attention to the women's doubles, in which she and American Lisa Raymond are the top seeds and defending champions.
