Stosur on track for doubles title
It may not be the singles title Australia was craving, but Samantha Stosur is closing in on an Australian Open title, cruising into the women's doubles final.
Top seeds Stosur and American Lisa Raymond defeated fifth seeds German Anna-Lena Groenefeld and American Meghann Shaughnessy 6-2 6-4 in their semi-final at Rod Laver Arena early on Thursday morning.
Stosur and Raymond raced to an early advantage, grabbing an early service break before closing the opening set out in 30 minutes.
But the second set was a far more difficult affair, with games going against serve until Stosur and Raymond broke Shaughnessy to take a 4-3 lead, then Raymond held her serve to open up a match-winning lead.
Stosur and Raymond now play China's No.12 seeds Zi Yan and Jie Zheng in the final.
Stosur is also alive in the mixed doubles, teaming with fellow Australian Paul Hanley in the quarter-final on Thursday against Mike Bryan and Corina Morariu of the United States.
Hanley is also through to the men's doubles semi-finals with his partner Kevin Ullyett of Zimbabwe, who beat Australia's Todd Perry and Swede Simon Aspelin 6-3 4-6 6-3 in Wednesday's quarter-final.
Hanley and Ullyett play world No.1s Bob and Mike Bryan in their semi-final Thursday.
