Swallow wins Rising Star pick
Gold Coast Suns midfielder David Swallow has won the AFL round 14 Rising Star nomination.
Swallow kicked two goals, laid five tackles and took five marks against the Western Bulldogs last weekend.
The 18-year-old, who was the first pick in the 2010 AFL draft, has played 11 games and averaged 19 possessions in his first AFL season.
Suns coach Guy McKenna said Swallow had set a high standard since arriving at the club as a 16-year-old in late 2009.
"David is one of those rare kids that comes into the system and has a real understanding of the training and professionalism required to be an elite AFL player," McKenna said.
"It is no surprise to anyone at the Gold Coast Suns that he has been nominated for the award. He is a quality person who has played a role beyond his years in his first season of AFL football."
Recruited from the Rossmoyne Junior Football Club in Perth, Swallow was a member of the 2008 AIS-AFL Academy and represented Western Australia in the NAB AFL Under 16 Championships.
In 2009 he was the joint winner of the Larke Medal awarded to the Division One best and fairest at the Under 18 Championships.
He played with East Fremantle in the WAFL that year and spent the entire 2010 season playing for Gold Coast in the VFL.
He finished fourth in the J.J Liston Medal at the age of 17.
