Ex-Rooster helps keep Wigan dream alive
Former Sydney Roosters wing Amos Roberts scored a stunning try to give Wigan an 18-12 victory over Castleford and ensure their Super League play-off dream remains alive.
The 28-year-old put the final nail in the Tigers coffin at the DW Stadium as he killed off any chance of a second-half fight back after Wigan had taken control before the break.
Harrison Hansen opened the scoring for Brian Noble's men with former Parramatta and Wests wing Pat Richards adding the extras from the touchline.
One-time Newcastle Knights centre George Carmont then scored a converted try to put the Warriors into a commanding 12-0 half-time lead.
Roberts then made it 18-0 but Castleford - coached by ex-Brisbane star Terry Matterson - hit back and prop Craig Huby put the Tigers on the board.
Teenager Joe Westerman then converted his own try four minutes from time to bring Cas within a score of tying the match.
But resilient Wigan defence ensured they progressed and they will now play Hull KR at Craven Park for a place in the semi-finals.
Catalans Dragons held off a Wakefield Trinity Wildcats fight back to book their ticket to the preliminary semi-finals courtesy of a 25-16 victory at Belle Vue.
Dragons, coached by former Brisbane half-back Kevin Walters, raced to a 16-2 half-time lead courtesy of three tries in the space of seven minutes from Vincent Duport, ex-Wakefield second-row Olivier Elima and Dimitri Pelo.
Pelo then added another after the break to put the French side in control.
John Kear's men refused to lie down and Luke George's double and Ryan Atkins' try moved Wakefield to within a score of the Dragons.
But France stand-off Thomas Bosc eased the pressure with a late drop goal.
And Catalans will now face Huddersfield after they lost their qualifying play-off against St Helens 15-2 at Knowsley Road.
Saints, who finished second behind Leeds in the Super League table, did the damage in the opening 20 minutes as they blew the Challenge Cup finalists away.
Ex-Penrith forward Tony Puletua set the ball rolling while England half-back Leon Pryce and former New Zealand Warriors centre Francis Meli also crossed the try line.
A penalty from ex-Wests Tigers and Parramatta Eels full-back Brett Hodgson ensured Nathan Brown's men got on the board but Sean Long hit a late drop goal to seal the win.
Leeds made light work of Hull KR in the opening play-off game on Friday night to win 44-8 - but the game was overshadowed by a horrific injury to Rovers centre Chev Walker.
Former Leeds man Walker suffered a compound fracture of his left leg after just 11 minutes following a collision with Keith Senior.
Ex-New Zealand Warriors second-row Ali Lauitiiti scored two out of the 10 tries for the Rhinos with Lee Smith (2), Brent Webb, Jamie Peacock, Ryan Hall and Senior also putting their names on the scoresheet.
Former Wests centre Daniel Fitzhenry's try had kept Justin Morgan's men interested in the first half but Leeds showed their class to cruise to victory after the interval.
