Kiwi Ah Van stymies Saints

Patrick Ah Van stopped St Helens from creating a three-way tie at the top of the Super League by kicking a trio of goals for Bradford in a dramatic 14-14 draw on Sunday.

The 23-year-old, a former Warriors winger in the NRL, converted first-half scores from Australian Brett Kearney and Andy Lynch before slotting a second-half 35-metre goal in off the post.

That kick gave the Bulls a 14-12 lead which they would cruelly surrender at the death with Jamie Foster booting a penalty, his third goal, with the last kick of the game after Lynch was controversially penalised for obstruction.

It completed a weekend where all four teams at the top of the Super League - St Helens, Wigan, Huddersfield and Warrington - failed to register a win, leaving the Wolves still level on points at the top with the Giants.

Warrington lost for the first time in six games against struggling Salford, former Canterbury Bulldogs full-back Luke Patten scoring for the City Reds in an 18-16 win.

Making matters even worse for the Wolves, who included six players involved in Friday's England-Exiles game, was that Salford came from 10-6 down at half-time to cause the upset.

Warrington looked to be on their way to another routine victory after first-half scores from Chris Bridge and Lee Briers but the City Reds had other ideas.

Patten, who made over 200 NRL appearances for Canterbury, started the fightback in the 45th minute with ex-North Queensland Cowboys centre Mark Henry also adding to Sean Gleeson's first-half score.

Henry converted his own try and Patten's former Bulldogs team-mate Daniel Holdsworth the other two as Salford, despite Richie Myler's late converted try, recorded the shock.

Huddersfield slipped to their first defeat in four, 13-10 to second-bottom Wakefield, with Luke George scoring the Wildcats only try in the win.

The 23-year-old wing crossed as early as the third minute with nine points, four goals and a drop goal, from the boot of Gareth Moore helping see Wakefield to only their sixth league victory in 17 games this season.

The Giants saw Shaun Lunt and Jamie Cording cross in the space of 19 second-half minutes but by then it was too little too late with Moore's 62nd-minute drop goal sealing the Wildcats' win.

Wigan couldn't make the most of results around them either, with Castleford centre Joe Arundel bagging a double in a stunning 22-22 draw.

Like Warrington, Wigan led at half-time, in their case by 22-4, with ex-Sydney Roosters five-eighth Brett Finch one of four first-half scorers.

However having scored through Dean Widders in the closing stages of the opening period, Castleford turned the tide in the second half by grabbing four tries of their own, including two from Arundel.

The Tigers should have won but Kirk Dixon only kicked one goal.

Elsewhere ex-Wests Tigers second row Willie Manu was one of seven scorers as Hull racked up a hefty 38-6 win over freefalling Harlequins -- who slumped to their eighth straight loss.

Ryan Hall scored a hat-trick as Leeds beat Hull KR 44-14 and Australian-born Ireland international Damien Blanch grabbed two tries in Catalan Dragons' 31-18 win over basement club Crusaders.
