Roosters bag 26-22 win over Wests Tigers
The Sydney Roosters' dramatic run to a fairytale NRL finals berth has continued with a 26-22 golden-point extra-time win over Wests Tigers at Telstra Stadium.
Forced into extra time for the second week in a row, the Roosters went one better than last week when they were held to a draw, with Braith Anasta and Amos Roberts setting up the match-winning try for Joel Monaghan one minute 57 seconds into extra-time.
It continued Brad Fittler's unbeaten run as caretaker coach of the Roosters and kept alive their unlikely finals charge which looked in danger when Anasta's field goal attempt with the scores tied at 22-all hit the crossbar with just 15 seconds left in normal time.
The Tigers looked gone when Robbie Farah was taken from the field in the 51st minute, the in-form rake unable to run off what looked a painful hip injury as the home side trailed 16-14.
But after a painkiller and a quick and very public medical examination in front of 25,166 fans, Farah ran back onto the field.
His return paid instant dividends, with the Tigers scoring for a 20-16 lead with 13 minutes remaining.
Brett Hodgson delivered a brilliant around the corner pass to put John Morris in the clear before he drew Roosters fullback Sam Perrett and passed for Liam Fulton to go over under the posts.
The Roosters were far from dead, though it took a dubious blocking penalty against Chris Lawrence on Setaimata Sa for them to gain possession close to the Tigers line.
From there Mitchell Aubusson went over out wide, Amos Roberts nailing the conversion from the sideline for a 22-20 lead.
Anyone thinking that was the end of it was sorely mistaken, a penalty against Lopini Paea for a high tackle on Liam Fulton after he had stayed down allowing Benji Marshall to lock it up with four minutes remaining.
The Tigers made a dream start when Farah ducked in behind a far too eager Roosters defensive line to pounce on a John Morris grubber for a 6-0 lead after five minutes, but a mix-up between Benji Marshall and Brett Hodgson gifted the visitors possession.
Roosters centre Iosia Soliola made the most of his late call-up to the starting side when he held off three defenders before offloading for Amos Roberts to score, the prolific winger making it Roberts 10-6 when he touched down on the same blade of grass following a perfectly executed set play.
The visitors finally lost momentum when Soliola was taken from the field on a medicab, the Kiwi international to have season-ending surgery on Monday morning after rupturing the patella tendon in his right knee.
Marshall continued an indifferent night defending on the wing when Joel Monaghan outleapt him for a 16-6 lead, Roberts denied a hat-trick moments later when Braith Anasta's lead-up pass was called forward.
The decision was as correct as it was crucial with what would have been a 22-6 lead instead turned into a slender 16-12 advantage when impressive Tigers rookie Ben Te'o ran over the top of Heath L'Estrange just before half-time.
