Ex-Rooster Roberts soothes Wigan's woes
Former Sydney Roosters winger Amos Roberts scored a late try to ease the pressure on under-fire Wigan coach Brian Noble with a 24-18 Super League win at Harlequins on Saturday.
The win ended a three-game losing streak for the glamour club, Harlequins left to rue a host of missed chances to make the game safe at the Twickenham Stoop.
Tries from Shaun Ainscough bookended the game and despite going behind early on, Quins rallied when former Manly hooker Chad Randall crashed over and Matt Gafa touched down.
Quins proceeded to be wasteful with a host of scoring chances and paid the price when George Carmont and Phil Bailey scored after the break.
Harlequins prop Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook bullied his way over from close range to tie the game and then former Wigan man Chris Melling dived over in the corner to give the hosts a four-point advantage.
But Roberts's predatory instincts and Ainscough's scoring touch turned the game back in Wigan's favour in the final five minutes.
It was less tense in the day's other fixture as Castleford ran in nine tries in a one-sided 52-16 home win over Shaun McRae's Salford.
Dean Widders, in his first season with the Tigers, following his post-season move from South Sydney, opened his account in the second half.
