Moss wins Rising Star nomination
Hawthorn forward Garry Moss has won the round five AFL Rising Star nomination.
The 20-year-old booted four goals against West Coast at Aurora Stadium last Saturday to help steer the Hawks to an 18-point victory.
In just his fifth AFL match in three years, Moss gathered 24 possessions and took nine marks.
He was Hawthorn's fifth selection (56th overall) in the 2006 AFL Draft. He was delisted at the end of 2008 and was re-drafted as a rookie.
Moss made his AFL debut in round seven, 2007, and after playing 14 matches for the Box Hill Hawks, was sidelined by a hip injury for the rest of the season. A groin injury hampered his 2008 season.
Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson said Moss' persistence paid off and he had been able to force his way into a strong forward line-up.
"This is Garry's third year in the system and after suffering some injuries early in his career he is starting to get some positive results for his hard work," Clarkson said.
"Garry's story is a good lesson to young aspiring footballers that there is more than one pathway to playing AFL."
In 2006, Moss captained Western Australia at the NAB AFL Under 18 championships, was named an Under-18 All-Australian and was playing senior football for East Perth.
