Lions groom ahead of Cats match
Brisbane ruckman Jamie Charman is aiming for a repeat performance against Geelong when the Lions play the Cats in the second round of the Wizard Cup in Cairns on Saturday.
In round 21 at Skilled Stadium last year, Charman won a Rising Star nomination in the Lions' 55-point demolition of Geelong.
Charman teamed up with No.1 ruckman Beau McDonald to shut down All Australian follower Steven King.
The 20-year-old is looking forward to match-up again with King, who is now Geelong's captain.
"He'll certainly be a big task," Charman said.
Approaching his third year in the AFL, Charman knows the ups and downs of playing at elite level.
It was only a month after his Rising Star nomination when he became the AFL's heartbreak kid.
He was dropped for the experienced Clark Keating in the preliminary final against Port Adelaide.
Charman then missed out on playing the Lions' nine-point defeat of Collingwood in the grand final after being in the team for most of the year.
He said missing out on the two most important matches of the year was the greatest disappointment in his short career.
"It's in the back of your mind and hopefully that can push you through during the year and you can have a pretty good year," he said.
For the Maryborough-born ruckman the match in the far north Queensland city will be a home coming of sorts.
A few years ago, before being picked up by the Lions, Charman spent half a season playing with the Cairns Saints.
He and speedster Luke Power will be part of the Lions' charm offensive in Cairns and will visit schools on Friday.
With Keating and McDonald injured, Charman is relishing his role as No.1 ruckman in the pre-season competition.
"I don't mind it too much at all," Charman said.
"But it's not very far away until the other boys are back."
