Slingers down Wildcats in Singapore
The Singapore Slingers caused an NBL boilover with a 112-105 overtime victory over the Perth Wildcats in Singapore.
Slingers guard Mike Helms Bagged a massive 44 points while, for the Wildcats, Paul Rogers top scored with 23.
There were more than ten lead changes throughout but an uncharacteristically strong defensive and rebounding effort by the home team eventually gave them the edge.
The Slingers led 53-47 at the half and the teams were tied 70-70 at the end of the third period.
Two consecutive long-range threes by Slingers centre Chris Cameron in the fourth period had the home side 83-74 up with more than five minutes to go.
But the Wildcats went on a 7-0 run in the span of 40 seconds to make it 89-92 and the game went into overtime at 94-94.
"This was a good win and we really needed it," said Slingers coach Gordie McLeod.
"For a young team like us, we're going to enjoy every win we get and I think the way we played tonight reflected our full week of practice. This is our most consistent game at both ends of the floor, and I was pleased with the way we finished the game off."
The Slingers now have a win-loss record of 2-8 while the Wildcats are 4-4.
The Slingers will face the Breakers at New Zealand on Thursday while Perth will take on the Brisbane Bullets at home on Saturday.
