Slingers off bottom with win over Hawks
Singapore left the South Dragons floundering at the bottom of the NBL ladder after beating fellow strugglers Wollongong 113-102 on Sunday night.
Mike Helms scored a game-high 28 points as the Slingers (5-20) ran out comfortable victors at the Singapore Indoor Stadium to climb from out of the cellar for the first time in several weeks.
It leaves the Dragons (4-17), who have lost eight straight, dead last on the ladder, with the Hawks (6-16) also still in contention for the wooden spoon with five rounds remaining.
Singapore took control of the game in the third quarter, turning a 47-43 halftime arm-wrestle into a healthy 80-68 lead at the final change.
Helms was well supported by American Rob Grizzard (23 points and 10 rebounds) and Ben Knight (19 points, 11 boards), while Kavossy Franklin led the visitors with 28 points and six assists.
