Wildcats dodge Bullets, snatch 90-87 win
A barnstorming finish from Perth gave the Wildcats a thrilling 90-87 NBL win over the Bullets at the Brisbane Convention Centre.
The upset victory took the Wildcats to the top of the NBL log with six wins from six matches.
The Bullets looked headed for victory up 14 points midway through the third quarter, but the Wildcats launched a 13-2 run which 212cm centre Justin Brown finished off with two huge baskets.
Perth then produced a tremendous defensive 12 minutes to disarm Brisbane's arsenal and keep the Bullets to just 11 points which eventually proved the difference down the stretch.
Brisbane went into the final term leading 76-73.
They stretched it to nine points before forward Tony Ronaldson nailed back-to-back trademark three-pointers, stepping out of the key and drilling both shots.
Ronaldson's experience and ability to make good decisions under pressure shone through with the "Bear" finishing with 30 points from an 11/20 shooting night.
Perth hit the floor without Boomers centre Paul Rogers who withdrew for family reasons while the Bullets were boosted by the return of big man Mark Bradtke, making his first appearance for the club after missing the opening three games with a hamstring injury.
After a massive 12 games played across the country and in Asia the NBL's newest franchise, the South Dragons, remains the only club without a victory.
Playing their first home game of the season, and with veteran guard Shane Heal bravely hitting the court, the NBL minnows threatened to post their maiden win at Melbourne's Vodafone Arena on Saturday night.
That was until Wollongong's US import Cortez Groves unleashed a blistering second quarter assault on his way to a 30 point and 15 rebound MVP performance to seal a 102-93 win.
NBL newcomers, the Singapore Slingers kicked off one of the busiest rounds of NBL action with a runaway 126-89 thumping of West Sydney early in the week.
The up-tempo Brisbane Bullets ran Townsville ragged 123-104 in the first game of their NBL treble and then overcame a tardy start to easily account for Adelaide who slumped to their fourth straight loss and desperately need Brett Maher back on the court before the streak becomes too damaging to recover from.
Perth, enjoying its best ever start to a season, steamed to its fifth straight win, easily accounting for the New Zealand Breakers 105-88 despite their long trip across the Tasman to Waitakere.
The Wildcat's Double Rs - Shawn Redhage (24 points and eight rebounds) and centre Paul Rogers, who had 20 points, spoiled the Breakers party in their 100th NBL appearance.
After opening the season with back-to-back losses to the Taipans and Slingers, the Pigs finally got off the mark with a 107-94 win at home against the Breakers thanks to a third quarter blitz which gave them a comfortable 13 point buffer heading into the final term.
James Harvey was instrumental in West Sydney's breakthrough victory, scoring 23 points and pulling down seven boards, while Liam Rush continued his impressive form with 18 points.
Import Justin Bailey chipped in with 14 but the star performer on the night was Breaker's import Carlos Powell who dazzled with a game-high 31 points.
In the tightest finish of the round, Cairns forward Martin Cattalini came up with a clutch basket five seconds from the buzzer to deny the Sydney Kings 91-90 in front of a vocal north Queensland crowd who did everything possible to get their team home.
Cairns applied the screws on the Kings with a dominating 30-17 third quarter, heading into the last term two points behind.
But Cairns managed to squeeze home despite a sensational 33 point and 11 rebound double from the Kings' David Barlow who hit five of his eight three-pointers.
In other results, Townsville rebounded from their loss to Brisbane after a spray from rookie coach Trevor Gleeson to topple the Kings in their second game of the round while the Tigers had little worries getting over the top of the Slingers 113-102.
