Viduka to be named Socceroos captain

Less than two weeks after flirting with international retirement, Mark Viduka will be confirmed as Socceroos captain on Friday.

Viduka will lead Australia into Friday night's friendly against Singapore towards the upcoming Asian Cup - the same leadership role he held in the Socceroos' heroic march to the World Cup round of 16.

The Newcastle striker had decided to bring down the curtain on his international career less than a fortnight ago, but made an 11th hour backflip and decided to play in the Asian Cup.

Coach Graham Arnold said at the time that Viduka decided to stay on with the Socceroos he would remain the team's captain, and will officially make the announcement on Friday.

Australia will use Friday's match against Singapore at the country's National Stadium as their final hitout ahead of their opening Asian Cup match against Oman in Bangkok on July 8.

Oman managed a less than convincing 2-2 draw with North Korea in a friendly match in Singapore on Thursday night.

Arnold has put his squad through two torturous sessions a day during their current training camp in Singapore to help them acclimatise to the hot, humid conditions they can expect during the Asian Cup.

Defender Lucas Neill admitted the camp had been a testing one, but expects to derive real benefit from it and Friday's friendly against Singapore.

"This will be the first match practice we've had together in a while," Neill said.

"We have the ability (to win the Asian Cup), but the first obstacle is to get fitness in the Singapore game."

Arnold is likely to pick his best 11 to start the match, with recovering Liverpool star Harry Kewell signalling he was fully fit and keen to start if selected.

The only Socceroos not available for the match are Everton midfielder Tim Cahill, who is not quite back to full fitness after breaking a bone in his foot in March, and striker John Aloisi who joins the Asian Cup squad early next week.

Aloisi was given a week off following the late end to his Spanish club season last Sunday.

The Australia-Singapore match marks the last match ever held in the 55,000-capacity Singapore National Stadium before it is demolished and rebuilt.
