In-form Breakers too strong for Slingers
A dominant second half display has given the in-form New Zealand Breakers a 116-99 victory over the Slingers at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
Led by Kiwi international Kirk Penney's 24 points, the Breakers now have a healthy 3-2 win-loss record as they try to secure a first post season berth in their fifth season in the league.
Singapore import Rod Grizzard had a game-high 25 points.
The Slingers were in touch at halftime, trailing 58-49, but had no answer for the visitors after the main break in a disappointing 17-point defeat that leaves them with a 1-7 record.
The visitors got off to a bright start, jumping out to a 7-0 lead as they attempted to earn a third straight victory and maintain a place in the league's top eight.
Grizzard finally got the scoring underway for the home side two minutes into the game as Singapore gradually worked their way into the contest.
The Slingers had a strong finish to the opening term, with Ben Knight giving them their first lead at 15-13 halfway through the period before a 13-7 run set up a 28-20 Singapore advantage at the first break.
The Breakers were able to quickly tie up the scores early in the second term however before a real arm-wrestle began, the teams trading baskets and neither able to grab the ascendancy.
But a two-pointer from veteran Tony Ronaldson, in his first season with the Breakers, gave them a one-point lead.
An 8-0 run to end the half then gave the visitors some breathing space, enabling lead by nine points at the main break.
The Breakers accelerated away from the Slingers after halftime to record a third straight victory and first on the road this season.
