Crocs down Slingers 106-93 in NBL clash
Townsville showed they would not be making up the numbers in the NBL final series after a convincing 106-93 victory over the Singapore Slingers in Townsville on Wednesday night.
The win earned the Crocs a date with the Sydney Kings at the Sydney Entertainment Centre on Friday night with a semi-finals spot against the Brisbane Bullets up for grabs.
The Crocs led from start to finish in Wednesday night's elimination quarter-final thanks to stellar performances from imports EJ Rowland, who scored a triple-double (13 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists) and Larry Abney, who racked up 30 points and 12 boards.
Crocs skipper John Rillie continued his hot form with 26 points, including five-of-nine from three-point territory, while guard Brad Newley showed why he is being tipped to be Australia's next NBA star with 19 points and five assists on a night when not everything went his way.
He was pressured by Slingers point guard Brad Davidson who kept his side in the contest with 17 points, and six assists including four consecutive triples in the third term after his side had trailed by 18 at halftime, 60-42.
Davidson was well supported by another former Crocodile in Ben Knight, who cracked 21 points and a massive 17 rebounds, with Mike Helms adding 20 points, eight boards and four assists.
The Crocodiles shot out of the blocks early to claim a 31-26 quarter time lead.
In the second term, the Crocs went on a 27-12 run to hold a comfortable lead at halftime.
Then Brad Davidson brought some excitement into the match with four straight three-pointers - including one from near halfway - as the visitors cut the margin to just nine at three-quarter time, 82-73.
Both sides made scoring runs in the final term with the Slingers trailing by only six points at some stages before the home side eventually coasted to a 13-point win.
The loss ends Singapore's season after the NBL newcomers surprised many to make the finals in their debut season.
