Hawks down Wildcats
The Wollongong Hawks went with their bench players to deliver an exciting 121-103 victory over the Perth Wildcats at The Sandpit.
The Hawks set up a mouthwatering top of the table clash against the Sydney Kings on Saturday night with a win that extended their winning streak to six games.
It was the Hawks bench players that did the major damage, outscoring the visitors by a massive 53-15.
None was better than Damon Lowery, who torched Perth for 25 points on nine of 11 shooting, including four of five from the three-point line.
His impact on the first half was devastating, scoring eight points in the first quarter, but better was to come.
He scored 14 in the second quarter, including a perfect four threes as he pushed Wollongong out to a 67-56 halftime lead.
"A lot of people have been critical of me for playing our bench, but I believe in their ability," Wollongong coach Brendan Joyce said.
"At the beginning of the year people didn't believe we had depth, but now they're talking about them because they're performing.
"They're maintaining an intensity level that is helping us to be successful."
The third quarter took a fiery turn with five minutes to go when the diminutive Lowery and the towering Matt Burston came together, with the smaller man ending up on his back.
