Hawks hammer Cannons again
Wollongong's play-off wildcard played himself into top finals form as the Hawks hammered the Canberra Cannons 124-94 at the Sandpit.
Playing against each other for the second time in just three days, the Hawks followed up the 47-point margin of the first game with another thrashing and finals specialist Matt Garrison led the way.
A member of the last two championship teams with the Hawks and Adelaide, Garrison is looked upon as the final piece in Wollongong's puzzle this year and he fired against the Cannons.
He continually drove the Canberra defence to distraction, with his jump shot almost automatic on his way to 26 points on 13 of 15 shooting.
Garrison did most of his damage in the second quarter, hitting six of his eight shots for 12 points, leading the Hawks charge as the scoreline blew out.
"I think Matt has been building towards this game for a while," Wollongong coach Brendan Joyce said.
"Once he gets the ball in his areas of strength he's not going to miss and he's one of the best shooters I've ever seen."
The Cannons were close for the just the opening four minutes, but a 10-0 run by Wollongong sent them on their way to a 36-20 lead a quartertime.
While the scoreline at halftime was a 19-point better effort from Canberra than the previous game, it was of little consolation as Wollongong led by 24 points, 63-39.
In their final game before the play-offs, Glen Saville ensured Wollongong didn't let up on the Cannons after the break, hitting 15 points as they took an imposing 94-62 lead into the final quarter.
