Hawks show title credentials
Wollongong removed the last lingering doubts about its NBL championship credentials with a crushing 90-61 victory over West Sydney.
Having taken all before them this season, the monkey on the Hawks backs remained their record in the second game of weekend doubles, going into the Razorbacks clash with a 0-6 record.
After beating Melbourne on Friday night, Wollongong put their unwanted statistic to bed with a devastating display that gathered momentum after halftime.
The only time the contest looked an even match-up was in the opening minutes as the team's traded baskets, but when the Razorbacks fell behind after four minutes, the scoreboard lead soon became a distant memory.
A 15-2 run, led by the hot hands of forward Adam Ballinger and his ten first-quarter points, put the Hawks in the box seat with a 30-17 lead at quarter time.
The second quarter will be quickly forgotten by both teams, with just one basket a piece in the opening five minutes summing up the ugly shooting troubles that engulfed them.
Wollongong managed just five of 22, allowing West Sydney to win their only quarter of the game, and giving them some hope in the second half as the score sat at 45-34 at halftime.
With just three minutes of the second half gone the Razorbacks trailed by just 10, but the Hawks juggernaut quickly clicked into gear and left the visitors devastated.
Wollongong reeled off a 23-8 run that had the result in their pockets with a 73-48 lead at three-quarter time, but the misery wasn't over for West Sydney.
The Hawks hit the first 11 points of the fourth to go in front by a humiliating 36 points, before Wollongong coach Brendan Joyce gave some valuable time to his bench with eight minutes still left to play.
