Groves spearheads Hawks to NBL win
Wollongong guard Cortez Groves launched a long range blitz to spearhead the Hawks to a 105-91 NBL victory over Perth at The Sandpit on Saturday night.
The Hawks took full advantage of a Wildcats team coming off a double overtime win the night before, building a match winning margin before Perth could get their legs going.
Groves was the main weapon for Wollongong in the first half, sending them to the halftime break leading by 16 points.
An explosive opening quarter netted him 13 points, and he had 21 at the half including five three-pointers.
The production slowed after halftime, but the damage was already done, and three more three-pointers gave him a near career high from outside the arc.
Groves was sensational in finishing with 31 points, including an unstoppable eight of 13 from beyond the three-point line.
The long shot served the Hawks well in their early stages of the game, with six of their first seven successful shots coming as three-pointers.
With Glen Saville providing support to Groves with three threes of his own, Wollongong led 28-21 at quarter time, their first quarter time lead of the season.
The Hawks continued to dominate in the second quarter, outscoring the Wildcats 25-16 to be up 53-37 at halftime.
Perth opened the third quarter on a 7-0 run to show they weren't about to lie down, but Wollongong coach Brendan Joyce turned to bench guard Adam Caporn for a crucial cameo.
