Blaze down Wildcats in 88-84 thriller
The Gold Coast Blaze have their sights firmly set on the NBL top four after a thrilling 88-84 win over the Perth Wildcats at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre.
The NBL's newest franchise has now won 14 matches and has almost guaranteed a maiden finals appearance after the come from behind win.
The loss ended a four-match winning streak for the hot Wildcats.
Coming off a spirited win over the Bullets in Brisbane on Friday, the Wildcats started strongly and led by a point at quarter time but the Blaze came out firing in the second period and took a 50-43 lead into the main break.
Mid-season signing Luke Whitehead, already a cult figure thanks to a sickening college basketball accident posted on YouTube, led the way for the home side with 12 first-half points on the way to a total of 21, starting the second half with a spectacular slam dunk.
The Wildcats closed the gap back to a point midway through the third period and trailed by three at the last change.
They hit the front two minutes into the last quarter but the Blaze lifted again, stealing the lead with just two minutes remaining, holding on for a thrilling victory.
Co-captain James Harvey (13 points) and Scott McGregor (14) chipped in with double-figure contributions for the Blaze.
Shawn Redhage was Perth's best with 24 points and was the only Wildcat to score more than 10 points.
The win was sweet revenge for the Blaze who felt hard done by in a tough loss to the Wildcats in Perth three weeks ago.
The Blaze host Adelaide next Sunday night while the Wildcats travel to New Zealand to take on the Breakers on Thursday.
