Molik wins in Birmingham, Dellacqua out
Newly crowned French Open doubles champion Alicia Molik continued her winning ways with victory in her first-round match at the DFS Classic in Birmingham on Tuesday.
The Australian fought back from a set down to beat 10th seed Severine Bremond of France in one of the traditional women's warm-up events for Wimbledon, which starts on June 25.
Molik won 4-6 6-3 6-4 and next meets American Vania King, who beat Brenda Schultz-McCarthy of the Netherlands 7-6 (9-7) 7-6 (9-7).
Only last week, Molik, who is continuing her comeback from a career-threatening middle-ear infection, won the French Open women's doubles title with Italian partner Mara Santangelo.
The other Australian in the singles draw in Birmingham, Casey Dellacqua, lost her second-round match to Greek No.15 seed Eleni Daniilidou of Greece 6-4 6-4.
Australia's top-ranked woman, world No.28 Samantha Stosur, was forced to withdraw from the tournament after a recurring heel problem flared up but was confident of playing at Eastbourne next week and then Wimbledon.
Queensland veteran Nicole Pratt is receiving treatment in Italy for an arm injury in a bid to be fit for Wimbledon.
