AFL Tippett wins rising star nomination
Adelaide forward Kurt Tippett has won the AFL Rising Star round eight nomination after a standout game against Melbourne.
The 21-year-old Queenslander, who has kicked 13 goals since his AFL debut in round one, booted four goals against the Demons at AAMI Stadium on Sunday.
Tippett switched to Australian Rules from basketball, in which the 200cm star junior represented Queensland and toured the United States with the Queensland Academy of Sport.
His future seemed destined for the court when he was made a member of the talent identification squad for NBL club, the Brisbane Bullets.
But in 2004 he was introduced to football by Ben Merrett, the son of former Brisbane captain Roger.
He began at an AFLQ Independent Schools competition and quickly graduated to the Southport seniors.
Two years later he played in a Southport premiership and was Adelaide's second selection and No.32 overall in the 2006 AFL Draft.
During his debut year as an AFL listed player Tippett suffered neck and shoulder injuries but after a strong performance in the pre-season cup this year he has played every match this season.
Crows coach Neil Craig said the youngster was quickly establishing his place in Adelaide's forward line.
"Kurt still has plenty to learn about the game and he understands that," Craig said.
"But it is exciting for the club and our supporters to see him showing some really good signs as a key forward and occasionally in the ruck."
