Wonaeamirri is AFL Rising Star nominee
Exciting forward Austin Wonaeamirri has been rewarded for inspiring Melbourne to their first win of the season with the round-seven nomination for the AFL Rising Star award.
The Tiwi Islander kicked four vital goals in the six-point comeback victory over Fremantle on Sunday, celebrating in exuberant style on each occasion.
The 19-year-old has been a rare shining light in an otherwise dark start to the season for the Demons.
"Austin has been very professional with the way he conducts himself and has worked really hard since arriving at Melbourne as a rookie," said Demons coach Dean Bailey.
"He was given an opportunity in round three earlier this year and has grabbed it with both hands.
"Not only did Aussie's four goals contribute to the win on Sunday, but his forward-line pressure and tackling was exceptional."
Wonaeamirri grew up on Melville Island before moving to Darwin to play for the famous St Marys club.
After playing senior football for Norwood in the SANFL last year, he was picked up by the Demons in the 2007 rookie draft and promoted to the senior list to replace the injured Jack Grimes in round three.
