Bullets thrash Pigs 120-102
Star duo Ebi Ere and CJ Bruton put on a basketball clinic to give the Brisbane Bullets a 120-102 victory over the West Sydney Razorbacks.
Ere returned to his superb recent form after a disappointing game last time out against Singapore, scoring a game-high 27 points, while Bruton put on 20 second-half points to prove a matchwinner for the Bullets.
The Razorbacks battled from behind for most of the game with star import Darnell Hinson the standout, scoring 19 points including three three-pointers.
The win lifted the Bullets to 11-5 for the season and showed a dramatic improvement on their performance against the Slingers on Sunday night.
But the Razorbacks now find themselves 7-9 and in danger of missing the finals.
Ere turned on his match-winning form early in the game, posting nine points in the first quarter as the Bullets opened a 26-23 lead by the first break.
The visitors grabbed the lead in the second quarter but Ere again showed his class when he landed a dramatic shot from outside the stripe right on the buzzer to put the Bullets ahead 50-49 going into the main break.
The third quarter was again a topsy-turvy affair, Ere and CJ Bruton both hitting a treble of three-pointers each as the Bullets opened up an 11-point buffer midway through the quarter.
Again the Razorbacks wouldn't lie down, cutting the Bullets lead to just six entering into the final term 84-78 despite Bruton's 20-point haul for the quarter.
As for most of the match the Bullets started the final term the stronger of the teams, quickly opening up a game-high 23-point lead with Ere and Bradshaw dominating the key.
Razorbacks coach Rob Beveridge said it was the final score, not the loss, which had left him more disappointed.
"Tonight it was disappointing because there was an 18-point margin and if people see that they'll look and see us as easybeats," said Beveridge.
"That inspires me as a coach to go out and get better and I know it will motivate the players.
"We made what I would call mental errors and that's what I'm trying to teach the guys about - reducing the amount of mental errors.
"All teams have them and it's those that have them the least amount of times that usually win the game."
Bullets coach Joey Wright said the final scoreline didn't reflect the tight contest.
"They were in it for most of the game, there was probably a three or four minute patch there where we blew it out a bit but that score wasn't indicative of how close it was," Wright said.
"We stepped up, they played a good game, they played a great game but I thought our guys played a little bit better.
"We executed when we needed to, got shots down when we needed to and got stops when we needed to."
Despite the loss, Razorbacks guard Darnell Hinson wasn't discounting his team's chances of making the finals but said a win against Sydney would be pivotal.
"It's an important weekend for us, we've got to pick up one of these games," Hinson said.
"I think if we can make the playoffs we'll be a tough team, if we get things right we can beat anybody any night, we've just got to get there."
