Hawks beat Pirates 116-96 in NBL
Import Cortez Groves scored a game-high 30 points as the red-hot Wollongong Hawks shot down the Hunter Pirates 116-96 on Saturday night to stretch their winning streak to five games.
The Hawks killed the Pirates from long range with three pointers contributing 60 of their 116 points.
They made 20 of 47 attempts at 43 per cent to equal the club record of three's made, matching the previous mark of 20 of 42 against the Canberra Cannons in 2003.
The Pirates were in the game at three-quarter time, trailing 82-76, but had no answer to a three-point blitz by the visitors.
Groves, Ben Castle and Adam Caphorn (two) opened the final period with four straight bombs to blow the margin out.
Groves had 27 points at three-quarter time, but played second fiddle to Caphorn down the stretch.
The diminutive guard had a career-high 11 assists in the Hawks' 112-95 win over Adelaide on Wednesday, and set another personal best on Saturday night with 23 points, including six of nine three-pointers.
The Pirates shot the ball at 57 per cent from the field but made just five of 19 from downtown.
Import Mike Helms again led the way for the Pirates with 28 points while Russell Hinder landed 27 points to equal his best.
Wollongong's win-loss record has improved to 8-6 while the Pirates' dropped to 6-9.
