Pirates edge out Taipans in extra time
The Hunter Pirates scored a pulsating 118-117 win over the Cairns Taipans in overtime to record their first series win in the NBL club's history.
The Pirates trailed for most of the match but star import Brian Wethers hit a three-pointer to lock the scores at 109 apiece at the end of regulation time.
The lead was traded in an intense and action-packed five minutes of extra time but the Pirates kept their cool to record a much-needed victory.
The Pirates looked to have the match in their keeping at 118-115 with 34 seconds on the clock and the ball to in-bound.
But with the memory of their last second loss to Sydney still fresh, guard Brad Davidson had his pass intercepted by Nathan Crosswell, who raced away for a lay-up and a 118-117 lead.
Cairns had a final chance to score a match-winner but a desperate shot rattled off the rim.
The win ended a four game losing streak for the Pirates and gave them a historic series victory following a 115-103 triumph over the Taipans on December 8.
The Pirates improved their record to 8-11 while Cairns have slipped to 7-14.
After giving up double-digits leads in four straight losses on the road before Christmas, the Pirates were forced to come from behind tonight.
They trailed 32-31 at quarter time, 61-56 at the long break and 85-81 at three quarter time.
