Goorjian slams bench players
Sydney coach Brian Goorjian described his team's last fortnight as "hell" and slammed his bench players after the Kings scored a 107-94 National Basketball League home win over the Hunter Pirates.
A sizzling third quarter performance in which the Kings outscored the Pirates 39-22 set up Sydney's fourth win in six games and Hunter's fourth defeat in five fixtures.
While pleased with the efforts of his starters in that quarter, Goorjian was very disappointed with his benchmen as Sydney was outscored 25-19 in the last quarter.
"I thought they (the starters) went where they needed to get away from Hunter and win and that was good defence, a good job on the boards and finishing, with no turnover," Goorjian said.
"Then I thought the bench did a very poor job of bringing their lunch pail and finishing it off and I told them that.
"In this group we have ten guys that can play, those three or four guys that came on at the end did a poor job and put a poor finish to what could have been a very good game."
Goorjian was worried about the match as Sydney had come off two tough back to back fixtures against Brisbane and Melbourne and was playing its fifth fixture in 12 days, while Hunter had eight days to prepare for Sunday's clash.
"If you go over the last two weeks, it's been hell," Goorjian said.
Sydney led for almost the entirety of tonight's match, bar a few moments in the second quarter when Hunter was twice briefly in front.
Hunter trailed by seven at quarter time and two at the long break, but was scorched by some hot Sydney shooting in the third term.
