Cullen spearheads Pirates' upset win
Geordie Cullen scored 14 points in the final quarter to lead the Hunter Pirates to a hard fought 127-115 win over Brisbane in the NBL clash.
Voted the league's most improved player last season, Cullen shot five from six in the final term as the Pirates converted a 84-82 lead into a much-needed victory at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre.
Cullen finished with 23 points, three rebounds and one blocked shot.
He was given valuable support inside from captain Ben Melmeth (21 points and 11 rebounds) and Russell Hinder (12 points and 13 rebounds).
The Pirates' cause was helped when Bullets mountain man Bobby Brannen fouled out with nine minutes remaining.
Pirates import Brian Wethers was again outstanding and led all scorers with 27 points, one more than compatriot Kabossi Franklin.
The Bullets stayed in touch through some great outside shooting from Stephen Black (26 points), Simon Kerle (21), Derek Rucker (20) and Michael Hill (18).
The 127 points was a club record score and improved the Pirates' win-loss record to 2-4.
The Bullets have now dropped to 3-6.
After a 108-97 victory over Melbourne on Friday night, the Bullets were chasing their first road double of the season, despite missing star import Kevin Freeman (groin).
