Bullets snap Pirates streak at Hunter
Brisbane Bullets snapped the Hunter Pirates' three-game winning streak with a gutsy 107-95 NBL win in Newcastle.
The Bullets withstood a spirited fightback from the home side after the Pirates came from 16 points down at the half to be within four points in the final quarter.
The game was the Bullets third in four days, the win coming 24 hours after being demolished by 25 points by the Melbourne Tigers in Brisbane.
The victory means the Bullets are now 13-14 and they leapfrog the Pirates into sixth place.
Brisbane forward Bobby Brannen led the scoring with 29 points, supported strongly by guard Stephen Black who had a tremendous game with 28 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds.
Veteran Derek Rucker had 16 points for the Bullets.
Dynamic Hunter guard Mike Helms tried hard for the home side with 23 points.
It was a crucial game for the two teams with the Bullets winning the season series 2-1 which decides play-off positions in the case of a tie.
After drawing their biggest crowd of the season, it was a heartbreaking loss for the Pirates, coming after a week of speculation regarding the future of the second year franchise.
Despite Brisbane's shooting near 60 per cent in the first quarter, Hunter led 31-28 at the break.
In the second Brisbane's transition game clicked into gear and they put together at 16-0 run midway through the stanza.
Brannen has been the Bullets' most consistent player this year and he scored 18 first half points to go with streak shooter Black's 16 leading the visitors to a 62-46 halftime lead.
In the third, on the back of the boisterous home crowd, the Pirates clawed their way back to within striking distance, closing out the third quarter with a 10-2 run making it 82-72 at the final break.
When Helms made a breakaway dunk to begin the fourth, the home fans could sense an upset but Brisbane remained in control.
