Cairns on fire with fifth straight win
The Cairns Taipans have a maiden National Basketball League playoff berth firmly in sight after stretching their club record winning streak to five games in round 11.
Sixth-placed Cairns (9-7) defeated struggling Perth 100-72 at home on Friday before causing the upset of the round, beating the Hawks 98-91 in Wollongong.
Wollongong (2nd; 12-4) is now one win behind Sydney in the fight for the minor premiership.
The Taipans' winning streak has vaulted the fifth-year club up the ladder and in sight of its first playoff spot.
"If we haven't got the respect of the league now, then shame on the league," Cairns coach Guy Molloy said.
"We've been through every conceivable adversity, but we're playing as good as anyone in the league at the moment."
The West Sydney Razorbacks (5th; 10-7) flexed their all-Australian muscle in round 11 with two road wins over championship contenders.
The Pigs had a serious point to prove against Sydney to start the round after copping a hammering back in round four from its fierce rival.
It responded well for a 97-87 win behind a 23-point game from captain Sam Mackinnon and then backed up with a 112-104 road win over Brisbane (3rd; 10-4).
Sydney (1st; 13-3) suffered its second straight loss, against the Razorbacks, but rebounded with a 108-88 thrashing of Hunter (12th; 1-12), who remain last.
