Helms provides spark for Pirates NBL win
Hunter guard Mike Helms provided the vital spark in overtime to lift the Pirates to a 114-105 NBL victory over West Sydney at Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre on Friday night.
Helms scored nine of his game-high 29 points in overtime to lift his side to only its third away win in nine games this season.
The Razorbacks slumped to their sixth loss in nine home fixtures despite big contributions from their two most recent recruits Pero Vasiljevic and Graeme Dann.
Vasiljevic finished with 24 points, 10 rebounds, three blocks and seven turnovers while Dann contributed 21 points and seven rebounds.
Adding to the drama the game clock had to be altered twice in the final minute.
There was a further delay at the start of overtime when there was a problem with the shot clock.
Neither team lead by a double-digit margin until the Pirates broke away in overtime during a match marred by numerous turnovers and fouls.
The Razorbacks led by seven at quarter time, but trailed by four at the long break after a miserable second quarter in which it made only three out of 21 field goals, none of which came in the final six minutes of that period.
Helms apart, Hunter got a strong performance from forward Geordie Cullen, who piled up 20 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks.
Centre Ben Melmeth scored 19 points while former Razorback Russell Hinder and guard Brad Davidson each logged 18 for the Pirates.
