Melbourne withstood a strong second half comeback by Hunter to record an exciting 106-99 NBL win on Saturday night.

The Tigers led by 19 points at halftime and appeared on track for another comfortable victory, but Hunter had other ideas and looked set for a stunning win when they tied the scores late in the contest.

Melbourne centre Chris Anstey, playing most of the final quarter with five fouls, kept his poise and scored the Tigers' final eight points, all from the free-throw line, to secure the win.

Anstey finished with a game-high 28 points and added nine rebounds and five blocked shots, while veteran point guard Darryl McDonald turned in a vintage performance for the Tigers handing out 14 assists.

McDonald's ball distribution helped Dave Thomas contribute 19 points and Darryl Corletto 16.

Russell Hinder led Hunter with 18 points and 11 rebounds and Aaron Trahair, Geordie Cullen and import Mike Helms each added 16 points.

Melbourne coach Al Westover was pleased to take the win despite the second half fadeout.

"We seemed a little flat and they hit a couple of shots and got excited," Westover said.

"Once they hit a few shots they got momentum, got excited and picked up their defence.

"I'm proud of the fellas. We were able to come up with some good plays down the stretch.

"It was good to make the plays and get the win."

Hunter coach Adrian Hurley was proud of his team's endeavour despite falling short in their quest for victory.

"It was a good effort to get back to 98-all but then we missed a couple of shots," Hurley said.

"It was a big improvement for our team. We worked on trying to be tough and we achieved that.

"We had a chance to win and it shows we're heading in the right direction as a team."

Melbourne's second quarter appeared likely to set up a blowout win as they outscored the Pirates 35-19. With McDonald leading the way the Tigers were scoring at will and at the other end of the floor they were limiting Hunter's effectiveness.

Hinder had a hot hand in the second half for the Pirates, who closed to within nine points at the final change.

The Pirates continued to chip away at Melbourne's lead and eventually leveled the scores at 98-98 with just over two minutes remaining.

The Tigers regrouped and McDonald continued to get the ball to Anstey who was secured the win from the stripe.

Melbourne improves to 15-5 while Hunter's record drops to 9-12.
