Bullet-proof Pigs smash Brisbane
The West Sydney Razorbacks showed there was no place like home as they completed a miserable weekend for pre-season NBL title favourites Brisbane.
The Pigs (1-1 win-loss record) had 120 points piled on them in their opening match in Perth but shut down the Bullets' armoury with an excellent defensive effort in their 106-75 victory at Olympic Park.
West Sydney big man Simon Dwight (20 points, 18 rebounds, five blocks, five assists) controlled proceedings in the paint as Brisbane endured an awful shooting night, hitting just 28 of 100 from the field.
The Bullets could not hit a bus with a bucket of paint in the opening half, connecting on 12 of 49 from the field to end a forgettable trip south following Saturday night's loss at Wollongong.
West Sydney had many stars with forward Scott McGregor scoring 26 points, and import centre Nick Horvath (17, nine rebounds) provided another impressive effort.
Brisbane had the better of the early exchanges before the introduction of last summer's rookie of the year Steve Markovic midway through the first term.
Looking like a character out of comedy movie Dodgeball with his curly dark hair and blue headband and socks coming well above his ankles, the teenager sparked the Razorbacks to a 29-20 quarter time lead.
West Sydney further stymied the visitors' offence with big man Simon Dwight combining a towering defensive effort with a three-pointer on the halftime buzzer for a 60-36 lead in front of a modest crowd of 1500.
McGregor, nicknamed Big Mac, feasted on offence bringing up his 20th point just moments into the third term as the home team cruised to Mark Watkins' first NBL victory as head coach.
The Bullets (1-2 win-loss record) meet the Pigs (1-1) again next Saturday in Brisbane's opening home game of the season.
