Pigs snap losing streak
Young guard Steven Markovic shrugged off his recent injury woes to lead West Sydney to an upset NBL win over highflying Wollongong 96-82 at Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre.
Markovic, whose minutes were severely limited in the Razorbacks last two games because of a foot problem, injected some much needed offensive spark for the Pigs' with a game-high 23 points off the bench as the home side snapped its five-match losing streak.
Wollongong, which lost for only the third time in ten matches, couldn't pull off another remarkable escape act after recovering from a 25-point deficit to beat Townsville.
The fluttering Hawks offence went long stretches of the first half without producing a field goal and made just a miserable 29 per cent of their field goal attempts.
The Pigs kept Wollongong to its lowest score of the season and the Hawks suffered a loss in the back end of a two-game week for the third time in the current campaign.
West Sydney bolted to an early 21-6 lead with Markovic exploding for 11 points in five minutes, including three three-pointers as the Razorbacks established a 32-18 advantage at the first break.
Markovic hit five of eight three point attempts in his 27-minutes on court.
Forward Simon Dwight scored 22 and centre Nick Horvath 21 for West Sydney.
The Hawks never got the deficit under five before halftime, though they did get within four in the final quarter.
Veteran guard Darnell Mee kept the Hawks in the game in the second quarter with 13 points, nine of them from the free-throw line, but West Sydney still enjoyed an 11-point 54-43 half time lead.
