Pigs looking to stay in NBL finals hunt
At least one member of the Mackinnon family is guaranteed of playing a basketball final this season.
Unfortunately for West Sydney Razorbacks fans, it doesn't look like that family member is former Boomers forward Sam Mackinnon - for now.
While his wife Rebecca prepares for the Sydney Flames' WNBL preliminary final clash against Bulleen on Saturday, Pigs skipper Mackinnon will hope to celebrate his 100th game for West Sydney by keeping their playoff hopes alive.
The Pigs (9th; 10-19 record) will once again look toward Mackinnon when they tackle a must-win clash against minor premiership favourites the Hawks (1st; 19-10) at Wollongong tonight.
West Sydney must win its last three regular season clashes and rely on nearest finals rival Hunter (8th; 13-16) losing its final three games to make the top eight playoffs.
It's a huge fall from grace compared to last season when the Pigs went within minutes of clinching their maiden NBL title before succumbing to arch rivals the Kings.
The finals formula resembles Mission Impossible for the Pigs.
But the longest serving Razorback, big man Simon Dwight, believed if anyone could steer West Sydney to an unlikely finals berth, it was Mackinnon.
"He's a stalwart of the game, extremely experienced, a two-time Olympian, and his record speaks for itself," Dwight said.
"He's held in extremely high regard in the league and is one of the most athletic and exciting players that the NBL's ever seen."
