Arsego picks brains to beat Razorbacks
New Zealand Breakers coach Frank Arsego admitted to seeking some inside information to help his NBL team complete the double against the West Sydney Razorbacks.
At the end of a controversial week, the Breakers put their campaign back on track with a 106-97 victory in Auckland on Saturday night against last season's NBL runners-up.
It followed a 90-83 win over the Razorbacks on Friday night, also in Auckland.
Arsego said he had spoken to former Razorbacks coach Gordie McLeod, who guided the club to the 2003/04 final against Sydney Kings but now works at Basketball New Zealand.
"I always ring around," said Arsego.
"I rang Gordie and we talked a little, although they are a different team now to when he coached them. They have a different direction."
The Breakers improved their win-loss record to 3-3 to end a horror week in which it was revealed New Zealand international Dillon Boucher had sent a derogatory text message about Arsego to former coach Jeff Green.
But if the incident had caused any damage to team morale, it failed to register as the Breakers sent West Sydney home empty-handed.
Razorbacks coach Mark Watkins was furious that his experienced players, including the normally reliable Sam Mackinnon, did not step up for the visitors.
"Right now in our losses some guys are going missing," lamented Watkins.
