Dragons lock in Kogarah for home semi

NRL ladder-leaders St George Illawarra have turned their back on Wollongong's WIN Stadium to play their upcoming home final at Kogarah.

With the Dragons assured of home ground advantage in the first week of the finals courtesy of a top four finish, chief executive Peter Doust on Wednesday made the decision to play the fixture at the club's Sydney base.

Doust admitted the decision to play at WIN Jubilee Oval was also made in recognition of the support the NSW and Federal governments had put forward in redeveloping the ground in recent years.

"The Dragons are fortunate to have two boutique community venues from which to choose," Doust said.

"The club also recognises and appreciates the support for WIN Stadium remembering that the club's last home final in 2005 was hosted at this venue in Wollongong."

The Dragons had petitioned the NRL to have WIN Stadium regarded as a city venue - which would have allowed the Dragons to play there in week two of the finals if they qualified for home ground advantage in the second week.

The NRL rejected the proposal.

If they finish first or second, the Dragons will not get to play at home in week two anyway given a loss in week one of the finals will force them to play a sudden-death fixture away the following week.

If the Dragons finish top two and win in the first week of the finals, they will move straight into a preliminary final in week three.

Veteran winger Wendell Sailor said he was not bothered with playing at either venue as he basked in the glory of a top four finish.

"I love playing on both grounds - I don't really care," he said.

"As long as we've got a home semi I'm pretty happy with that because I know there's a lot of so-called experts that didn't tip us to make the top eight.

"I don't care where we play - home or away - I think we've shown that we can play anywhere, anytime."

The Dragons have lost just one game at each of their home grounds in 2009.
