Groves in the hoop groove
Wollongong's Cortez Groves led a one-man assault as the Hawks crushed West Sydney 119-93 at the Sandpit.
The Hawks kept their home court record intact and moved to a 7-2 record with a devastating finishing burst.
Leading by only three points with less than three minutes left in the third quarter, Wollongong put their foot down and roared away from the Razorbacks, finishing with a 49-26 run.
Groves was leading the Wollongong scoresheet with 18 points at the end of the third quarter, and exploded for 12 more in the last.
His final quarter collection started with a couple of clutch three-pointers, and was rounded out with some signature Cortez Groves sizzle that had the fans and teammates on their feet.
He added seven rebounds, seven assists, and three steals to complete the picture of his impact on the game, but his stats overshadowed his other key role.
Groves shut down dangerman Willie Farley, who could only connect on six of 16 shots.
"Cortez was the MVP of the game, not only scoring wise, but with what he did with his defence," Wollongong coach Brendan Joyce said.
"People wonder if he can defend, but look what he did against one of the toughest guys to defend in the league."
Wollongong set the tone in the first quarter, leading 28-23 at the first break, but they were ambushed by the Razorbacks in the opening minutes of the second.
