Davis earns Rising Star nomination
Adelaide defender Phil Davis admits surprise at being the latest nomination for the AFL's Rising Star award.
The 19-year-old collected 14 possessions while restricting Geelong spearhead Cameron Mooney to nine touches during Adelaide's 11 point win last Friday night.
Davis' nomination rewards consistency from the 12-gamer who has looked at ease in AFL ranks since his debut in round four.
"I have had a few good weeks but it's all a bit of a surprise to get nominated, there are a lot of good players out there," Davis said on Tuesday.
The back pocket said having experienced hands such as skipper Simon Goodwin, Ben Rutten, Graham Johncock and Nathan Bock in defence had helped him settle.
"We have got a lot of experienced players around. I'm the youngest in the back six so it helps to have experienced and talented players around you to get you accustomed to the speed of AFL," he said.
"The old blokes are performing well at the moment as well which is nice, so we have got a pretty good mix at the moment."
Davis, selected by the Crows with pick 10 in the 2008 national draft, won praise from his coach Neil Craig.
"He is very coachable, likes to listen and learn, and has worked hard to improve areas of his game," Craig said.
