Zaharakis grabs Rising Star nomination
Essendon teenager David Zaharakis' fine debut in the win over Fremantle has earned him the AFL Rising Star nomination for round two.
Playing on a wing, 19-year-old Zaharakis gathered 21 disposals including 17 kicks, 10 marks, four tackles and accumulated a match-high seven inside-50s in the 38-point victory at Etihad Stadium on Sunday.
From a whole package point of view we were pleased because not only did he win the ball but his disposal and decision making was really good for a young player," said Essendon coach Matthew Knights.
"He also chased, tackled and harassed - he put as much energy into this part of his game as any other part.
"As a match committee we loved that he brings a real energy and enthusiasm to his game and that is infectious on the team."
Zaharakis barracked for Essendon growing up and wore James Hird's number on his back.
The 19-year old from Eltham Football Club and Marcellin College was selected by Essendon with pick 23 in the 2008 AFL Draft and was one of three Northern Knights players drafted to the club.
