Markovic quits Pigs before NBL start
West Sydney guard Steven Markovic has walked out on the Razorbacks just days before the NBL season tips off.
Markovic, 20, has not attended team training since returning from the world championships with the Australian Young men's team and skipped last weekend's NBL pre-season Blitz tournament in Cairns.
Markovic, who was nominated for the NBA Draft earlier this year before withdrawing his application, is seeking a release from his contract with the Razorbacks to take up a lucrative offer in Europe.
However coach Mark Watkins is reluctant to let go of the 2004 NBL rookie of the year.
"He has done this seven days before the season starts," Watkins told Fox Sports.
"He has not joined us since the day he came back to Australia from the world champs and he did not come to the Blitz and has virtually walked out on us.
"It is frustrating to think this is the team we made a lot of changes to, we released Aaron Trehair because we thought it was time for Stevie to step up to that one role and lead the team."
Watkins' cross-city rival, Kings coach Brian Goorjian, believes Markovic should fulfil his NBL contract and then test his luck in Europe.
"I would like to see a situation obviously where the players with a contract finish the year and then they have the opportunity to do what they have got to do," Goorjian said.
"This will be interesting to see where it goes because I think it will have a big say in the future of the league."
