Bullets add to Razorbacks pain
Bullets guard CJ Bruton celebrated his 31st birthday in style with a hat-trick of final-quarter three-pointers as Brisbane inflicted West Sydney's 14th consecutive National Basketball League loss 110-101.
It was a belated birthday present his father, Cal, the coach of the Razorbacks, hoped his son would not get.
But with the Razorbacks threatening a massive upset after pulling to within eight points of Brisbane, Bruton unleashed on his father's team with his three telling bombs - the first right in front of his father who, when he played for Brisbane, was regarded as one of the NBL's great three-point shooters.
Bruton made sure of the victory then hit two more threes from the opposite side of the court - one of them almost from the stands.
"He took one right in front of my face, it was like a dagger," said Bruton senior.
"I was very happy with the effort tonight. I think we're on the verge (of a win).
"We won the second, third and fourth quarters after a horrible start in which we had 20 turnovers. I thought we were heading for a record."
The win was not as easy as many expected.
The Razorbacks fought back from a 20-point deficit in the first half and were still on the contest with five minutes to play.
In the end, the Bullets had too many weapons for the Razorbacks to counter.
After two weeks off, Brisbane understandably took a few minutes to shake off some rustiness with the Razorbacks literally coming out swinging.
Brisbane skipper Sam Mackinnon was in the blood bin in the opening minutes after coping a blow to the mouth.
But after some emergency repairs he rejoined the game and shortly after came up with a massive reject when Graeme Dann tried to put the ball in the hoop only to it swatted off the court.
The Bullets slipped straight back into their full court defensive press and by half time had forced 20 turnovers on their way to a commanding 57-43 lead.
Brisbane punished the slap-happy Razorbacks getting 21 points from turnovers alone.
Brad Williams showcased his three-point talents again with a game-high 14 points by half time.
Brisbane's hustle on the ball forced 29 turnovers.
While they easily beaten on the boards (51-42) they had an impressive 32 assists, led by guard Adam Gibson who had seven and 11 points.
The Razorbacks supplied the leading two scorers in rookie centre Julian Khazzouh (23 points and 11 rebounds) who drew praise from both Bruton and Brisbane coach Joey Wright and guard James Harvey, who had 22 points after getting into early foul trouble.
Brisbane's points spread was impressive with seven players notching double figures.
Mackinnon and Brad Williamson shared the honours with 20 points each with Mackinnon's all-round game highlighted by eight rebounds and five assists.
