Adelaide fires up in grudge match
In the end, the only thing that went off in the powderkeg Victoria Giants-Adelaide 36ers national basketball league clash on Wednesday was Sixers forward Dusty Rychart.
Rychart's game-high 34 points - 17 of which came in the final quarter - lifted Adelaide to victory 115-108 in the grudge match between the two teams who clashed in a wild post-match melee last Saturday night.
The NBL tribunal rubbed out chief protagonist, Adelaide's Martin Cattalini, for the game with a one-match ban and $1,000 fine earlier Wednesday and the only fireworks on Wednesday came from former Giant Rychart.
There was nothing between the teams throughout - two points at the first change, one point at halftime and two point at three-quarter time.
Enter Rychart, who broke the game open with some big baskets early in the quarter, including a three-pointer which pushed his side out to a match-winning eight-point lead.
Not even Giants skipper Rob Feaster's 32 points and nine boards could lift his side, which struggled on the defensive boards.
Proving the adage that any publicity is good publicity, the Giants sold out the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre for the first time in the wake of the much-publicised melee, cramming 2,200 into the venue.
