Sixers bounce back to defeat Giants
After two consecutive losses the Adelaide 36ers have bounced back to some of their best form, trouncing the Victoria Giants 123-111 at the Clipsal Powerhouse on Saturday night.
The Sixers were forced to fight all the way against a hard-working Giants outfit led by scoring-machine Jamahl Mosley who had a game-high 33 points.
Martin Cattalini led the scoring for the 36ers with 29 points while Matt Illman had 21.
Oscar Forman and Paul Rees combined to fill the void left by Sixers big-man Paul Rogers, out with a left foot fracture, grabbing 21 boards between them against the league's best rebounding team.
Down 8-10 after four minutes, the Sixers went on a 9-0 run to take an early lead in the opening quarter before the Giants whittled away an 11 point deficit to trail 31-24 at the first break.
Oscar Forman sunk his second three pointer for the game followed by a spectacular dunk off a Brett Maher alley-oop to open the second term and the Sixers were away.
A Cattalini dunk saw the lead stretch to 17 before the Giants again fought back to trail by just nine, 61-70 at the half.
The Giants kept the Sixers lead to within ten points by lifting their shooting percentage to 60 per cent for the quarter after a woeful 44 per cent during the first half. But a three to Illman followed by a Charles Thomas dunk on the open break saw the lead out to 92-77 with 3:27 on the clock.
Going into the final term 97-88, the Sixers broke the game open with a devastating 12-2 run to lead 112-96. The Giants continued to battle hard but the Sixers prevailed by 12.
Dusty Rychart had 25 points for the Giants and Nathan Crosswell scored 20 while Jason Williams and Charles Thomas had 14 a piece for the Sixers.
"We were a bit nervous coming into the game tonight without Paul. But then Oscar came in and grabbed some big boards and we were away," said Sixers coach Phil Smyth.
The Sixers claw their way back to 3-6 for the season while the Giants fall to 3-5 after losing their last three games.
