Lion nabs first Rising Star nomination
Brisbane Lions debutant Daniel Rich has been named the NAB AFL Rising Star nominee from the first round.
The 18-year-old West Australian was a key player in the Lions' come-from-behind nine-point victory over the West Coast Eagles at the Gabba on Saturday night.
Rich made an instant impact in the Lions' midfield, gathering 21 disposals and four tackles.
Highly touted as a top three prospect leading into the 2008 AFL Draft, the Lions were surprised to get Rich with their first selection at pick seven.
Rookie Brisbane coach Michael Voss said Rich had exceeded expectations in his AFL debut.
"His work ethic was probably what impressed me most," said Voss. "We certainly think he can add something to our midfield in the future."
An impressive junior career saw him earn dual All-Australian honours at the 2007 and 2008 AFL Under 18 championships and play in back-to-back grand final triumphs with senior WAFL team the Subiaco Lions.
