Leuenberger and Rich re-sign with Lions
The Brisbane Lions have received a major double boost in an otherwise disappointing AFL season, with young stars Matthew Leuenberger and Daniel Rich signing new two-year contracts.
Ruck-forward Leuenberger, 23, and 21-year-old midfielder Rich - the 2009 Rising Star winner - are two of the most important members of coach Michael Voss's squad.
The West Australian-born duo would both have attracted massive interest in the trade market had they chosen to look elsewhere.
"I can see a lot of promising signs within this footy club," said Leuenberger.
"We've got some really good young kids and I can sense that, with what Vossy's doing and the way he's got the group going forward, I don't think we can help ourselves but be successful in the near future.
"To me, that's exciting, it's something I want to be a part of."
Rich could also see better times ahead for the Lions, who currently sit in 15th spot on the ladder with just three wins.
"We've got a good, young team that if we can all stick together and work hard, success will come," he said.
"The club's moving ahead, not only in footy, but in other areas as well.
"Brisbane is where I want to be.
"It's a great city and I'm confident I can get the most out of my football here."
Second-year player Ryan Harwood has also agreed to a new two-year contract, while 2010 draftees Ryan Polec and Patrick Karnezis have had their initial deals extended by one season.
The Lions will now shift their focus to their other gun ruck-forward, Mitch Clark, who has been strongly linked to new franchise Greater Western Sydney.
Clark is out of contract at the end of the 2011 season.
