Rich vein of form for young Lion
Brisbane Lions coach Michael Voss has declared that Daniel Rich will be the unluckiest player ever not to win the Rising Star Award after a best on ground display against Fremantle.
Rich returned home to collect 31 possessions, have 11 clearances and kick a superb long goal in atrocious conditions at Subiaco Oval in the Lions' 15-point win over the Dockers and Voss couldn't be happier with the 19-year-old, but also the support he is receiving.
"I'm not tremendously into individual awards, but Daniel Rich would have to be the unluckiest person in history not to win the Rising Star this year. At the moment, he's in some very good form and had 11 clearances so he was pretty critical for us," Voss said.
"He has grown into his role, into the club and feels as though he belongs there. The way he's able to feed off Simon Black, Luke Power, (Michael) Rischitelli and (Jared) Brennan has been very good, but the reason why they are going alright as a group is because they are a group."
The Lions have some concerns out of the game, but Voss is confident a hamstring injury to Daniel Bradshaw and an ankle injury to Brennan won't see them miss much more than a week.
The Lions are looking solid in sixth spot on the ladder, but Voss knows his relatively young team needs to keep performing.
"It's up to us to focus in on the now rather than trying to predict the future. We aren't mature enough as a group to start to forecast and pencil in this, that or the other," Voss said.
"We have to make sure that we present in a competitive fashion and that our fundamentals are there every week. Across this whole game we grinded away to win."
Fremantle coach Mark Harvey took more positives from the game than the embarrassing loss to Adelaide, but could have lost midfielder Andrew Foster for the season with an ankle injury and is unsure on Chris Tarrant's knee.
"It's (Tarrant's injury) possibly not serious, but we'll await scans. It could only be a week. He did come back on the ground for a brief time, but moving sideways was the problem," Harvey said.
"He was terrific on Jonathan (Brown) before he got hurt. There's a bit of damage there (Foster's ankle) and he might be out for a period of time."
Fremantle competed well despite only having 34 inside-50 entries opposed to Brisbane's 62, but Harvey needs more out of the experienced players when Matthew Pavlich and Aaron Sandilands are out. Both should face West Coast on Saturday.
"Naturally when more responsibility falls onto some of our experienced guys playing you'd like to see them have the same influence as the players we have out," he said.
"I'd say both (Pavlich and Sandilands) will play, but they will have to get through training sessions. Everything is indicating that they will be available."
